Saywire is a private, online learning community service provided to schools and educational institutions for the purpose of helping students learn, collaborate, and develop skills needed in the twenty-first century.
Rosters are provided to Saywire from the school or learning institution and only students and faculty that are listed on the rosters are allowed to become members of the Saywire service. The general public is not allowed access. Students and faculty are required to use their real names while accessing the service. Alias names are not allowed. Students and faculty may only communicate with other members. Communication with anyone outside of the Saywire network is not allowed through this service.
For students, Saywire collects and retains only a student’s name, graduation year, (from the school roster) and portrait picture (if provided by the school). The student’s name and portrait are used on the student’s home page and in connection with any item that the student creates. No additional personal information is needed or required in order for the student to become a member and participate in the service. For faculty, Saywire collects and retains the name, position, portrait picture (if provided), and email address (if provided). Saywire may collect the IP address of the computer(s) being used by the student or faculty for auditing, performance, and security purposes. A child’s participation in any activity on the saywire.com site will not be unreasonably conditioned on requiring the collection of additional personal information to participate in that activity
Saywire uses session ID cookies that allow for easy navigation of our service. A cookie is a small text file that is stored on a member’s computer for record-keeping purposes. These cookies expire when you close your browser. We do not link the information we store in cookies to any personal information from our members.
Members may provide additional personal information through chat rooms, blogs, personal pages, etc. This information may be viewed by other members. Care should be taken by members in making any personal information available as other members will have access to such information. Saywire does not retain this additional information for its use.
Saywire does not rent, sell, share, or provide personal information to any third parties for their promotional purposes. Saywire may provide or sell aggregated (anonymous) data. An example would be data from polls or surveys.
Saywire allows parents of student members the right to view, edit, and remove any personal information regarding their child. Parents may elect to remove their child’s membership at any time and have all information about their child removed from the service. Parents must contact Saywire by any method listed below or they may contact their school administrators or teachers at their child’s school.
Parental consent may be required for students under the age of 13. Schools must obtain verifiable parental consent before they give the student access to the Saywire service if they have not already done so. Schools should supply the parents with a parental consent form to sign, along with the privacy statement. Once a parent signs the form and returns it to the school, the school may then assign a member ID and a password to that child. Schools and parents should stress to the child that the member ID and password is private and should not be given to anyone else.
The security of your personal information is important to us. Saywire follows generally accepted industry standards to protect the personal information submitted to us, both during transmission and once we receive it. No method of transmission over the Internet, or method of electronic storage, is 100% secure, however. Therefore, while we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your personal information including data encryption using SSL (Secure Sockets Layer), we cannot guarantee its absolute security.
If you have any questions about security on our service, you can contact us by any method listed below. Saywire reserves the right to disclose a member’s personally identifiable information as required by law and when we believe that disclosure is necessary to protect our rights and/or to comply with a judicial proceeding, court order, or legal process served on our service.
We reserve the right to modify this privacy statement at any time, so please review it frequently. If we make material changes to how we use Personal Information collected from children under age 13, we will notify parents by email in order to obtain verifiable parental consent for the new uses of the child’s personal information.
